summer guide

Summer is traditionally the time when we all relax and get away from our schedules, often from our diet plans. Are there any ways or little daily “tricks” to stay in shape without depriving ourselves this summer?

Don’t stop exercising.

Despite the belief that summer is a period where physical activity decreases due to the heat, summer can be an excellent time for the population to increase their physical activity and improve their physical condition. Swimming & playing in the sea, as well as long walks by the beach or in the cool mountains in the early morning hours or late at night are just a few of the many options we have for physical activity. And for those who are not easily convinced, we always remind you that physical activity promotes and improves  mental health, fights obesity, enhances the quality of  sleep, while also reducing the risk of several cancers and cardiovascular problems. So put on your sunscreen and your good mood and go out for exercise, but not during the lunch hour!

Hydration

In recent years, high temperatures have been recorded even in mountainous areas, which is why hydration is vital for replacing the fluids our body loses through sweating, especially during the summer months. It is worth noting that drinks containing alcohol or caffeine are not as effective against dehydration, as cool water. A large bottle of iced water or a water bottle that keeps it cold is an ideal solution for anyone who spends several hours outdoors  and is exposed to high temperatures.

Portion Management

If there’s one thing we can say for sure that we miss from our summer vacations, it’s the very rich breakfasts in hotels, or the traditional bakeries on the islands, the seaside resorts, and even in the mountain villages. Also, no one can resist the picturesque tavernas or restaurants by the sea. Controlling portion sizes during the summer months is perhaps the golden key to success in maintaining body weight. We experiment without  guilt, we choose different foods, but we always pay attention to the amount we put on our plate, without forgetting that the food will be there the next day.

“Liquid” Calories

And for all of you who don’t skimp on food portions, but notice differences in your body during the summer, we have the solution to your question. The “invisible” calories hidden in the cool cocktails, soft drinks, colorful granitas, and drinks that follow one another in the alleys of the islands are the answer you are looking for. High consumption of beverages with added sugar or high alcohol content results in significant dehydration and weight gain accompanied by noticeable, visible swelling.

General population recommendations for men up to 2 drinks/day and for women up to 1/day (We remind you that these are always recommendations for the general population during the holiday period which is limited if  the person systematically consumes alcohol)

Less Stress

We could certainly talk for hours about the negative effects of stress on our bodies and just one article would definitely not be enough. The sun, the sea, the mountains, the beauties of nature in general, the vacation and the few days we escape from the everyday life of the city are helpful in getting rid of negative thoughts, concepts and responsibilities. Stress is, inevitably, our daily companion in life, but maybe this summer we will leave it behind while going on vacation.

We know very well that in order to stay healthy there is no “magic guide” but only our own personal will and effort. We enjoy the summer and the days of rest, relaxing, without regrets, but we never forget that balance is the golden key.
